Seven Characteristics of Highly Effective Adult Learning Programs
This article addresses my reflective questions on my blog welcome page – specifically my differing experiences as an undergraduate and graduate student. The importance of creating environments that support and allow students to feel safe is a critical component that, although recognized, may not be given enough value. Without the feeling of safety and support, students will not experiment and look for creative solutions; will not be able to become self-directed learners and will not be actively engaged in the learning. Before students are able to grow and work just beyond their level of ability they must be comfortable in their environment.

Creating the Ideal Learning Environment
Creating a positive learning environment never happens by accident. This article defines a number of ways in which an instructor can create a positive learning environment As important as the techniques are, there is also a leadership quality required for successful instructors. The Leadership Challenge (Kouzes & Posner, 2006) believes we all get better when people enable others to achieve extra-ordinary things. Using the Leadership Challenge five fundamental practices – Model the Way; Inspire a shared vision; Challenge the Process; Enable Others to Act; and Encourage the Heart – will help to enhance the classroom techniques that provide the positive learning environment.

Adults in modern society are on a lifelong educational journey
This article highlights the interconnectedness of lesson plan components – specifically, the classroom foundation of safety, engagement, and respect. It also highlighted for me, the instructor responsibility in setting the environment in order that a student fully engages in the learning. Again, I realize that it is not just the subject matter and intended outcomes but more importantly, the development of environments that include learner perspectives, personal relevance, and personal recognition of learning. As a teacher I recognize the focus required for the development of personal connections and self directed learning plans is the cornerstone to student motivation and success.
9 Step Instructional Process that Just Works
Reflecting on the adult attention span of 10 – 15 minutes with the closing being the second most remembered part of the lecture I felt this article aligned well with the instructional skills workshops. A bridge into the subject area, overview of the objectives and a pre assessment of the class can be completed within a fifteen minute window. The instructor would then move into the body of the lesson, post assessment for student to demonstrate learning and then summary closure and overview. Moving forward my goal is to work my lesson plans to the key learning windows of the students.
Using Bloom’s Taxonomy in the Classroom
Bloom’s taxonomy, although a resource that I have been aware of for many years, sometimes gets lost in my lesson plans. This resource provides examples of intended learning outcomes, measureable verbs, and methods of assessment. Using a problem based approach blooms taxonomy moves students through the stages of building knowledge, understanding and comprehension, to application and analysis. This website also provides a language for assessment. I am excited to spend more time with Bloom’s taxonomy as I see a solid framework that allows for individualized problem based learning and provides assessment criteria that can reflect the diversity of the learning.
