Importance of Group Work in Education

If one of the hidden objectives of a curriculum is to help students develop skills that will be valuable in the world of future employment I think having the ability to work in groups; work alone; work with partners; work across divisional boundaries; work across cultures is of value.  This can be achieved by creating a number of working environments within the class – one of which can be group work.

And we do need to make sure that the environment is structured with many of the suggestions that have already been posted – group work is not easy for the students or the instructor, but the instructor must be proactive and create an environment that supports some level of success.

If done well it is an amazing opportunity to address power in the room; cultural differences; expectations; strengths within the group; what people can bring…really just being able to work together – What a great skill to practice and learn.
