Heutagogy

Today, andragogy is a universally accepted educational approach where the adult learners are self-directed within a teacher directed curriculum.  For example, when I enrolled in distant education courses ( many moons ago)  the course was developed with a course pack that was delivered to my house. I believe I would have been considered self directed because I coordinated my learning and completed the prescribed work in isolation of colleagues or instructors…

Heutagogy is an educational approach that is being heralded as an optimal approach to 21st Century learning – Knowing how to learn in a society where information is constantly exploding.  In the article I posted Knowles (1970, p7) defined self-directed learning as “The process in which individuals take the initiative, with or without the help of others, in diagnosing their learning needs, formulating learning goals, identifying human and material resources for learning, choosing and implementing learning strategies, and evaluating learning outcomes.”

I believe heutagogy addresses a number of the contexts of expectancy theory as described in previous post – attainment theory and cost of the education.
